Marangu, Machame or Lemosho: choose the route that fits you

Marangu uses mountain huts; Machame and Lemosho use tents. The route you choose also determines the walking days and time you need in Tanzania. Compare those details first, then discuss the crew, equipment and price for your group.

Start with how you want to sleep

Marangu uses the mountain huts at Mandara, Horombo and Kibo. Machame and Lemosho use designated camping arrangements. Huts do not remove the physical demands or altitude exposure of the climb; camping requires its own clear equipment and crew plan.

Ask what is provided for sleeping, what you should bring and whether rental equipment is available. Your written quote should explain shared or private tent arrangements and the hotel nights around the route.

Count mountain days and travel days separately

The David Explora starting itineraries have six mountain days on Marangu, seven on Machame and eight on Lemosho. They are different planning options, not interchangeable names for the same week.

Allow for arrival, a briefing and equipment check before the climb, then descent, rest and onward travel. A seven-day Machame trek normally needs a nine-day Tanzania plan in this catalogue. The special 14-day journey keeps the same seven mountain days and adds safari, recovery and departure time.

Discuss your pace before choosing

Tell David about your walking experience, how you feel about camping and the days you can realistically take away. Ask how acclimatisation is built into the proposed itinerary. More time is a planning choice to discuss; no route or number of days guarantees a summit.

TANAPA requires guided climbing arrangements. Confirm the licensed operating arrangements, crew, applicable fees and safety provisions before you commit. A summit photograph should never matter more than the guide’s decision about the day.

Bring these questions to the briefing

If you want a taste of the mountain rather than a summit attempt, choose the separate Marangu rainforest day hike. It has a lower-trail turnaround and a same-day return to Moshi.

  • What is the full route, including arrival and departure?
  • Which hotels, huts or camps are planned, and what equipment is included?
  • Who provides the mountain operation and what safety arrangements are stated?
  • What changes if the guide decides we should turn around?
